Broadway Screenwriting Course ::

Ever wondered what went on at the Broadway evening courses, but were afraid to ask? Last month University of Nottingham Student, Grace Huber, attended the screenwriting course taught by Graham Lester-George.

How did you hear about the Broadway’s scriptwriting course?

I’m on Broadway’s email subscription list, though I believe many of the other people on the course found out about it through the monthly leaflet ‘whats on’.

What made you want to attend the scriptwriting course?

I decided to be pro-active and rather than just talk about how I would enjoy writing for film, I chose to explore the options available. Also I believed it would benefit my criticism of film as it would allow me to understand the process’s involved behind making films in greater depth. Broadway’s course seemed ideal as it has no expectations of anyone, and just enjoys the prospect of bringing film enthusiasts together and hopefully giving them a larger insight into film.

What has the experience been like? Have you learnt things about the process and the industry that you did not know before? (this is probably the most important one!)

The experience thus far has been superb! We have analysed how a scriptwriter constructs their ideas through looking at various approaches towards treatments and scipts themselves. Also we have studied the work of other writers and see how their attitudes towards writing a script vary. This is also encouraged outside the sessions as we were given a disc with many scripts on it. We are asked to look at them and see how the elements used by others may be applied to our own work.

I don’t feel I have necessarily learnt more about the industry than I knew before, it has simply brought home what a ruthless world the film industry is! In the final few weeks I believe we are going to be looking at independent cinema and how, realistically, this is becoming the market for novice film makers to get their foot into the door.

What are the tutors like?

Graham is truly excellent. I have been very impressed with his knowledge and passion for film. Currently he is in Cannes introducing one of his first short-film pieces. I think this highlights the calibre of the staff and shows how you can expect the best from Broadway.

What subjects are you keen to explore in your writing?

Currently I am working on an idea which explores the breakdown of traditional relationships through the internet-age, but equally the new relationships that have emerged through this medium. Graham is constantly telling us how a film should be a journey, whether it is a personal journey for the protagonist, or a larger journey for the world on mass. Most of the people in the class are focusing of personal relational stories, whereas I seem to lean more to the latter.

Are you thinking about attending any other sessions that Broadway offer? If so what would be the most interesting after scriptwriting?

After scriptwriting? I don’t know if I would approach it in these terms as the majority of courses offered appear to quite distinct. However, I believe an introduction to direction would partner up well after this one. I am interested in the Hitchcock classes.

Would you recommend others to go to future sessions at Broadway? Can we expect to see you in a few years time, premiering your film at Broadway?

Absolutely! It’s a fantastic course for a great price. The information I have learnt has given me a great standing for the future in how a script should be formulated and the endless topics that a film may cover. As for a premiere at Broadway… haha, who knows? we’ll just have to wait and see…
