A Return To Form? ::

When people are asked what they think funniest films ever made are, it is more likely than not to invariably mention a handful of films made by the ever present Woody Allen.

Allen has been responsible for not only some of the most iconic comedic images of the last few decades like his sneezing over questionable substances in Annie Hall but also some of the most touching moments of magic realism in the likes of the Sleeper (1973) or Purple Rose of Cairo (1985).  Allen has always managed to superbly portray the tensions inherent in relationships, the perpetual nature of existance and the falsness that embodies social class.

However after a series of films that have shied away from his native New York to focus on a London backdrop, Allen has continued his European tour with Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Many have argued that Allen lost his charm when he made the move from his great muse, New York, and began to use London as his geographic inspiration in films like Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006) and Cassandra’s Dream (2007). All three films received less than glowing reviews which are in stark comparison to the forthcoming Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Critically lauded as beintn2_woody_allen_1g a film where ‘Woody is back (again)’.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona follows two young American women (including another of Allen’s contemporary ‘muses’ – Scarlett Johansson) as they visit the magnificence Barcelona. The two are approached by a brutish bohemian painter Jose Antonio (No Country for Old Men’s Javier Bardem) who proposes a more than friendly idea that polarizes their attitudes. Penelope Cruz stars as an ex-flame of Jose’s, a role that has earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Oscar.

To celebrate Allen’s Spanish love triangle Broadway will be having a Spanish Food night on 17th of February
